Highway Mitigation Opportunities for Wildlife Along Highways 1,2 and 95 in Boundary County, Idaho

Project #: 4W3883
Start Date: 01/01/2012
End Date: 07/31/2012
Status: Completed
ABSTRACT:

WTI worked with the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y), the Idaho Transportation Department, Idaho Fish and Game, and the US Fish and Wildlife service to develop an analysis of existing wildlife crash and carcass removal data for Idaho Boundary County highways (Highway 95, Highway 2, and Highway 1) from county line to county line. WTI collected 10 years of crash and carcass data and conducted field site visits. Through data integration, researchers created maps of the road sections that have a concentration of wildlife vehicle collisions and that bisect important habitat or corridors for wildlife. WTI used the analysis data to suggest preliminary design options for mitigation measures and provide Y2Y with a cost-benefit assessment for these highway mitigation measures.

OBJECTIVE:

The purpose of this project is to provide the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y) with an analysis of existing wildlife crash and carcass removal data for Idaho Boundary County highways (Highway 95, Highway 2, and Highway 1).
