Bio: Mike served as the Transportation Safety Fellow. In this role, he spent his time supporting nationwide program management for the developing transportation safety program, overseeing and providing technical assistance for safety studies and projects in parks, enhancing policy and practice, and delivering grant applications for safety improvements. He has supported multidisciplinary safety studies, projects, and grants at Colorado National Monument, Saguaro National Park, and Suitland Parkway, among others. Prior to the fellowship, he had experience as a sustainable transportation ‘plangineer’ at the Boston Transportation Department, Boston Planning and Development Agency, and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. In London, he worked briefly for Arup as a Transport Planner, as well as with Go Jauntly, an app that showcases excellent walking routes, as a Walking Artist. In his spare time, he walks.

Project Title: Washington Support Office – Transportation Safety Fellow
Description:

This transportation fellow position will work with the NPS Washington Support Office (WASO) Transportation Branch on Transportation Safety. The NPS WASO Transportation Branch administers the NPS allocations from the Federal Lands Transportation Program (FLTP), and Transportation Fee Program, which comprise approximately 60% of transportation funding for NPS. The Transportation Branch supports units and regional offices in carrying out transportation planning and project programming activities for all modes of transportation and maintains management systems and tools used by staff throughout NPS. The Transportation Branch’s Alternative Transportation Program (ATP) focuses on transit systems, transportation trails, and transportation technology planning and implementation. The Transportation Branch also works closely with the Park Planning and Special Studies Division on long-range transportation planning.

Some of the potential projects that the transportation fellow will provide support for during this assignment include:

• Assist and lead in development of NPS Service-wide Parking Deterrent Guidelines
• Participate in a Technical Advisory Committee for context sensitive speed management strategies research project
• Contribute to annual regional transportation safety briefings
• Provide input on development of NPS Transportation Safety Management Toolkit
• Assist with and lead pilots of safety implementation plans, road safety audits, safety assessments, and park road safety plans
• Assist with Wildlife Crossing Pilot Program
• Assist with projects to improve crash data quality, document related processes, and update NPS crash databases
• Perform transportation safety related technical assistance to NPS parks and regions
• Write research needs statements & applications to Federal Highway Administration Innovation and Research Council
