Bio: Tristan Jilson currently serves as the Intermountain Region Office’s (IMRO) Transportation and Visitor Use Planning Fellow for the National Parks Service (NPS). Prior to the fellowship, Tristan served in the Peace Corps as an Environmental Educator in Guyana. After his Peace Corps service, Tristan served with AmeriCorps Cape Cod for a year, assisting the park planner at Cape Cod National Seashore and participating in a variety of group service projects. Tristan’s primary interests revolve around the intersection between transportation and visitor use management. Tristan’s 2023-2025 Fellowship with the NPS presents him with a variety of opportunities including, supporting IMR’s Alternative Transportation Program, assisting the Emerging Mobility Working Group’s efforts in improving trip planning for visitors, and participating in various visitor use and transportation data collection and analysis efforts across the region. Tristan’s work will allow him to work closely with NPS staff and gain insight into organizational structural as well as project management and planning processes.

Project Title: Intermountain Region – Planning & Visitor Use Fellow
Description:

This transportation fellow position will work with the NPS Intermountain Region (IMR) on transportation planning and visitor use management, gaining insight into these processes at both a regional level and in the field. The fellow will be stationed at the NPS Intermountain Region Office in Lakewood, Colorado. A typical commute from Denver to Lakewood in traffic is approximately 20-30 min by car. There is no direct public transportation to the Lakewood office. The fellow will occasionally be sent on field/site visits to parks in the region as needed (such as Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park) to assist with field work, at the discretion of the regional Alternative Transportation Program Coordinator. The locations for these assignments will depend on studies and planning efforts undertaken by the Region, with input of the fellow after the start of the position.

This transportation fellow will be focused on emerging mobility and equity impacts within the Intermountain Region. Some of the potential projects that the transportation fellow will provide support for during this assignment include:

• Identify opportunities to implement emerging mobility technologies in Parks to address transportation challenges and optimize visitor experience • Help the region identify transportation opportunities to facilitate more equitable access to Parks • Assist with transportation-oriented visitor use management efforts • Provide information as requested to Park, Regional, and National staff to help plan for future visitor use trends and inform future transportation planning • Assist with project and grant identification and coordination • Participate in the Emerging Mobility Working Group • Write research needs statements & applications to Federal Highway Administration Innovation and Research Council
