The Center for Environmentally Sustainable Transportation in Cold Climates (CESTiCC) is a consortium of three universities, led by the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), and including Montana State University (MSU) and Washington State University (WSU). The consortium provides multi-disciplinary programs engaged in innovative research, education, and technology transfer focused on transportation issues for environmental sustainability. CESTICC serves as a U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) University Transportation Center (Tier 1), addressing national, state and local needs in sustainable transportation, and advancing sustainable policies and investments that reduce harmful emissions from transportation sources. It supports the USDOT goal of Environmental Sustainability through an integrated, holistic approach to sustainable transportation and through accelerated research implementation and technology deployment.
The CESTiCC theme is “systematic approaches to environmental sustainability in transportation for cold regions and beyond.” Research program areas include materials and design; construction, operation, and preservation; stormwater management, conservation and ecosystem management, and environmental impact assessment.
The objective of this Center is to systematically engineer environmentally sustainable transportation infrastructures in cold climates, considering the entire life cycle of transportation lanning, design, materials selection, construction, maintenance and operations, preservation, and recycling through the collaboration of academia, industry, and other stakeholders.
