The core mission of the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is to enhance safety, mobility and economic development through its transportation activities in service to the citizens of Idaho. Towards this end, ITD seeks to provide outstanding customer service to all its customers – both internal and external. For ITD to achieve its mission in a way that exemplifies outstanding customer service, ITD needs to transform its leadership culture to one that embraces a constructive leadership style – that is a style that focuses on achievement, self-actualizing, humanistic / encouraging, and affiliated behaviors. By growing this leadership style and culture, ITD will be more effective at meeting the needs of Idaho’s citizens and delivering on its mission. Such a culture will also facilitate the recruiting and retaining of strong personnel which is a growing concern with the high degree of turn-over expected in staff due to high number of retirements in the near future.
The proposed project seeks to apply the Positive Community Norms framework of the Center for Health and Safety culture to grow norms associated with a constructive leadership with ITD. The Center will use its 7-Step Communication Process to develop a communication effort to grow positive norms associated with a constructive leadership culture. The project will also seek to integrate these efforts into existing activities within ITD and conduct an evaluation of the overall leadership development project.
This component will complement the other on-going activities within ITD as a part of its comprehensive leadership development program to grow a culture of constructive leadership and effective management supporting outstanding customer service both internally and externally.
