Potential Future Mitigation Measures for Wildlife and People Along I-90 and Other Major Highways in Western Montana

Project #: 4W949
Start Date: 06/01/2024
End Date: 12/31/2024
Status: Current
ABSTRACT:

This project focuses on measures along the major highways in western Montana that:

  1. Reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions with terrestrial wild large mammals (i.e., large ungulates, grizzly bear, wolverine, and species that are larger than a coyote/bobcat), which also improves human safety.
  2. Reduce the barrier effect of roads and traffic and increase habitat connectivity for terrestrial wild large mammals (i.e., large ungulates, grizzly bear, wolverine, and species that are larger than a coyote/bobcat).
OBJECTIVE:

This project will analyze and recommend mitigation strategies that reduce collisions and allow for safe wildlife crossings on I-90 and other major roads in western Montana.

Benefits: Reducing the number of animals killed on I-90 and other major roads in western Montana in vehicle collisions, and improving connectivity for wildlife will improve animal population health, driver’s safety, and lower costs to drivers and the public.
