Started: October, 2014 End Date: September, 2016 Project ID #4W5124 Status: Ongoing

Objective

The purpose of this project is to establish a center that will enhance access to education, outreach and training programs in a 10-state western region, with the ultimate goal of growing the transportation workforce.

Abstract

To provide for a more strategic and efficient approach to transportation workforce development, the Federal Highway Administration has established the Surface Transportation Workforce Centers Network to consist of five Regional Surface Transportation Workforce Centers. The Centers will engage/facilitate partnerships with State Departments of Transportation, State Departments of Education, industry, and other public and private stakeholders throughout the transportation, education, labor, and workforce communities. Center efforts will address workforce development activities at the 6-12 grade levels, technical schools and community colleges, universities, post graduate programs, and professional development for incumbent transportation workers.   WTI, in partnership with the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute at North Dakota State University, is leading the West Region Transportation Workforce Center for the ten state region of Washington, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oregon, Idaho, Nebraska, Wyoming, Alaska, and Hawaii.  The Center's activities will facilitate communication across states and across agencies to leverage scarce resources, to share and build on promising programs, and to create new communities of practice to enhance the transportation workforce at all levels.   Additional information is available at the Center website: wrtwc.org
