In 2023, Red Lake Nation schools piloted a new mobility program to bring teachers into the reservation for work using a vanpool. This proved to be a successful initiative, with daily commutes for six school staff becoming shared, and use of a contract with a third-party vehicle provider resolving challenges around insurance. The school district and other Tribal departments and stakeholders are interested in exploring similar opportunities or other ways to expand mobility options beyond driving alone and public transportation.
Future opportunities to extend transportation options may exist within the programs of Oshkiimaajitahdah, a Red Lake Nation tribal program that serves the economic and social well-being of families, children, and individuals through 22 different program areas. In addition, gaps are known to exist related to re-entry, housing authority residents, participants in the Youth at Work program, and more tribal programs. There may be opportunities to support alternative fueled vehicles, such as electric vehicles, in the school system or other programs, and to share success stories and lessons learned from a potential deployment. Another known mobility opportunities include transportation for the residents of Conifer Estates, a community within the City of Bemidji that is 93% native and includes many Red Lake member households.
The project team will work with Red Lake Nation leaders, stakeholders, members, employees, and partners to further develop an understanding and analysis of mobility gaps and opportunities and, to the extent possible, support additional innovative mobility efforts such as vanpools to complement other modes of transportation, such as personal vehicle and traditional transit.
Benefits: This project will benefit members of the Red Lake Nation by providing a path for additional mobility/transportation options to allow better and more cost-effective access to educational opportunities, health care facilities, job, and social activities.
