Wildlife-vehicle collision hotspot and cost-benefit analyses Gallatin County

Project #: 4WB089
Start Date: 08/01/2024
End Date: 12/31/2024
Status: Current
ABSTRACT:
  1. Deliver “cleaned up” wildlife-vehicle crash data and large mammal carcass data (larger than coyote) by 0.1 mi road segment for all system roads (i.e. Interstates, numbered US Highways, numbered state highways, including MT 64) within Gallatin County. The data will be delivered in Excel and ArcGIS format. Note that WTI is already compiling the data for a project funded by SURTCOM. While the data files will be delivered to CLLC as part of the agreement, CLLC is not funding this effort. CLLC will use the data as a starting point for further data analyses.
  2. Deliver the results of hotspot analyses for the data described above. This will be based on 2 separate data sources: carcass data and crash data (they will be kept separately, not merged into 1 parameter). Both data sources relate to 2008-2022, as well as separate analyses for the last 5 years (2018-2022). Note that WTI is already compiling these hotspot analyses data for a project funded by SURTCOM. While the data files will be delivered to CLLC as part of the agreement, CLLC is not funding this effort. CLLC will use the data as a starting point for further data analyses.
  3. Deliver the write-up for the data described above (tasks 1 and 2). This will be in the form of a report for SURTCOM. CLLC will integrate the report for SURTCOM in a larger report from CLLC to Gallatin County (delivered by CLLC, WTI is co-author).
  4. Deliver similar data (tasks 1, 2, and 3) for I-90 between Bozeman (jct with 7th Ave) and Livingston (jct with Hwy 89). This is partly in Park County. This will be funded by CLLC under this agreement. Note that this is not part of the work WTI currently conducts for SURTCOM.
  5. Conduct cost-benefit analyses for Gallatin County (2008-2022 data only, not 2018-2022). This will be funded by CLLC under this agreement. Note that this is not part of the work WTI currently conducts for SURTCOM.
OBJECTIVE:

To conduct cost-benefit analyses for major highways in Gallatin County (2008-2022 data only).

Benefits: The results of this project will allow decision makers to decide if and where mitigation measures will be implemented to benefit human safety through collision reduction with large wild animals. This will also benefit wildlife by reducing unnatural death and providing safe crossing opportunities across roads.
