The final booklet published by ATSSA presents several case studies that highlight innovative pavement markings that are intended to improve roadway safety by informing and warning drivers of certain aspects of the road, the road users, or the surrounding environment. These warnings are intended to promote positive driver behavior changes like slowing speeds, increasing awareness of other road users, correcting errant driver maneuvers, or operating a motor vehicle in an intended manner to improve safety.
The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) is developing a publication (approximately 30-pages) titled, Innovative Safety Solutions with Pavement Markings and Delineation. This publication will be the latest in the series of ATSSA case-study booklets produced to help reduce the number of accidents and injuries on our nation’s roadways. ATSSA members provide the majority of features, services and devices used to make our nation’s roadways safer. These include pavement markings, road signs, work zone traffic control devices, guardrail, high-friction surfaces and other roadside safety features.
Through this project, WTI will develop approximately 12-15 two-page case studies to be included in a publication that will serve as an easy-to-read resource and reference tool for local public officials and others who have the responsibility of making roadways safer. The publication will also be disseminated in roadway safety industry workshops and at various trade shows throughout the year. Of the three key elements of motoring safety – the driver, the automobile, and the roadway – this product is intended to focus on the roadway, specifically roadway infrastructure safety improvements related specifically to pavement markings and delineation. Each case study will include (1) a problem statement, (2) “before” data, (3) a description of the solution, (4) “after” data and (5) at least one photo. The publication may also include a list of best practices and tools, and internet links that readers can use to easily obtain more information. Case studies will address pavement marking topics such as curve marking delineation, audible markings, on pavement markings, transverse markings, and work zone applications.
