Dynamic Warning Systems to Alert Motorists to the Presence of Bicyclists

Project #: 4W6300
Start Date: 09/01/2016
End Date: 09/30/2018
Status: Completed
ABSTRACT:

Bicycle use has been increasing nationwide and many people enjoy riding bicycles along rural roads in scenic places. These roads often have high speed traffic, narrow or no shoulders and/or limited sight distances that put people on bicycles in a particularly vulnerable position. Engineering solutions such as wider shoulders or separated paths are not always possible due to political, topographic or economic constraints. This project explores a new application of existing bicycle detection technology combined with a flashing beacon to alert drivers to the presence of people on bikes on shared roadways. The aim of this effort is to improve road safety for people bicycling and driving by using existing technologies in a new way. This project will be conducted under the Coordinated Technology Implementation Program (CTIP) with funding from CTIP and the Accelerated Innovation Deployment (AID) programs. Results will be useful to jurisdictions that oversee rural roads where high speeds, road geometry, or other factors make bicyclists particularly vulnerable.

OBJECTIVE:

The objective of this project is to explore a new application of existing bicycle detection technology combined with a flashing beacon to alert drivers to the presence of people on bikes on shared roadways.
